Counselors assist people with personal, family, educational, mental health, and career problems. Their duties vary greatly depending on their occupational specialty, which is determined by the setting in which they work and the population they serve. Counselors deal with human development concerns through support, therapeutic approaches, consultation, evaluation, teaching, and research. Counseling is a growth process through which individuals are helped to define goals, make decisions, and solve problems related to personal-social, educational and career concerns. Counselors help clients with diverse needs including managing anxiety, coping with and reducing stress, adjusting to loss (death, relationships, job), making difficult decisions and clarifying choices, resolution of personal issues, eating concerns, drug/alcohol issues, and coping with incidents of sexual assault. Rehabilitation counselors help people deal with the personal, social, and vocational effects of disabilities. Mental health counselors work with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and to promote mental health. Marriage and family therapists apply family systems theory, principals and techniques to individuals, families, and couples to resolve emotional conflicts. Other counseling specialties include vocational, gerontological, multicultural, and genetic counseling. The duties of Counselors can be as diverse as the population they serve. Counseling degree graduates are professional practitioners in a variety of community settings and institutions: hospitals, schools, rehabilitation agencies, career planning centers, employee assistance programs, clinics, residential treatment facilities, and other mental health agencies.
