The True Meaning of Christmas

Giving, not getting, illuminates the true spirit of Christmas, and in the countless acts of putting the needs of others first we often come to find the things that matter the most. Although you would prefer to be together with your loved ones this Christmas day many of you will spend part of this day at work providing for the needs of others because injury and disease doesn’t take a holiday.
In this, the third year of the recession, please give thanks that you are fortunate enough to be in the position to help someone else’s loved ones and then go home to celebrate with your own. Your patients don’t want to be in the hospital any more than you do- and won’t be clocking out to go home to holiday cheer.
Be mindful of the difficulties many of our fellow citizens are facing during these times. Many have lost their homes and jobs. Be kind to those who come to your emergency room waiting area to be out of the cold for a while, to be someplace safe for a brief bit of time, or to simply be around people because they’re alone and depressed. Understanding, patience, a cup of hot chocolate, an accepting smile, and a few words of conversation may be enough to give someone the strength to make it through another day. Find a moment here or there to do just that- or even more- and experience the true spirit of Christmas!
Merry Christmas to my fellow Nurses, to all of our esteemed Paramedic and Allied Health colleagues, and to my dear readers who aspire to enter the health professions!
