How To Get A Great Paying Job

Unemployment is at one of the highest levels in history and hundreds of thousands of people are out of work. There are more people losing their homes to bankruptcy than ever before and although there are people who will tell you otherwise, most people really do want to find work rather than sit at home and collect unemployment.
The good news is, there actually are jobs available – and not just a few. In fact, the demand for people to fill these jobs is so strong that companies are virtually “screaming” for applicants. They’re offering new employees sign-up bonuses of thousands of dollars for good jobs that pay extremely well.
While the companies are ready and waiting to hire new employees, the problem is, the people who are applying for these great jobs don’t have the education or training they need. The jobs that are in demand are in the fields of nursing, allied health, healthcare administration, business management, engineering, biomedical information technology, consulting, design and other positions that require college degrees and additional “specialized” training. For those people thinking “Why do I need a college education?”, take a look at how things have changed. Thirty years ago when a job became available, most companies would advertise (a sign in a window, an ad in the newspaper or good old fashioned “word of mouth”) and 10 – 20 applications would usually come in for the job.
Now, even low paying “McJobs” bring in hundreds of applicants as quickly as they are advertisied. Job fairs have lines that seem to go on forever, and in a few years you can expect to see thousands of applications for every available unskilled job as global trade lead deindustrialization continues to shrink the availability of manufacturing employment opportunities in the US.
What does this mean for people who want to get a decent job? In today’s global environment, continued investment in your education and job skills is your best hope for remaining truly competitive in a world full of faster-growing, low-wage competitors. “Unemployment Rates for the population 25 years of age and older decline with each degree level attained”, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Simply put, it means going to college, getting a degree, followed by a program of specialized training. The jobs will be there, but if you aren’t “qualified” you’ll be left out in the cold, competing against thousands of other people.
Despite the bad economy at the moment, now is a good a time as any to be considering going to college or taking online classes to improve your credentials. When the economy bounces back (which it always does), workers with the right qualifications are going to be in big demand. So having completed a degree is going to position yourself to secure your future with a great job.
The cost of getting a college education is expensive and it’s getting higher every year, but if you’re serious about getting an education, there are all kinds of financial aid programs, grant’s, scholarships, tuition reimbursement, loan forgiveness programs, tax credits, and other forms of assistance available to help make college affordable.
The days of just going out and “finding” a job that can bring in enough money to live comfortably are gone. The people who will be working in good paying “careers” have to plan for their future. A college education, specialized training, a good attitude and commitment will be an absolute necessity unless you want to compete with a thousand other applicants for every “McJob” that comes along.
NBC’s Today Show recently aired a special segment called Back to School Again, which focused on adult learners. They noted that 40% of current undergrads are age 25 or older. Check out this video clip to see their tips for adults in college.
