If you’re new to online learning, the first thing you need to know is that the virtual classroom is a very different place than the traditional classroom. You’ll need to be much more self-motivating and self-directed to succeed in an online degree program, no matter what the discipline you’re studying may be.

While one of the great advantages of online learning is the flexibility to set your own schedule, it will help you stay focused if you pencil in time to complete your course work, assignments and readings on the same day at the same time each week. That way, you won’t feel stressed about having to find time to squeeze in your studies, and you can plan the rest of your week around your scholastic (and other) responsibilities.

Next, make sure you set up a study space that works with your learning style. Some people find that they can work just fine with music on, or in an environment where there’s a lot of bustle and chatter, while others need absolute silence in order to concentrate. Know your own learning style, and carve out a space for yourself that facilitates productivity.

Take advantage of forums designed to promote interactivity between yourself, the instructor and the other students taking the online course. Typically, you’ll be asked to participate in message forums, blogs or instant messaging sessions that give students an opportunity to network with each other and get questions answered. Remember the adage: “the only stupid question is the one that isn’t asked.” It is, perhaps, truer in the world of online learning than anywhere else, given that students new to the virtual classroom have a lot to learn about the learning environment as well as the material being studied.

Finally, don’t forget to implement the same tried-and-true strategies that lead to success in the traditional classroom. Get involved in the course to the greatest possible degree. Ask questions and seek answers on your own. Create a well-defined goal, and chart your progress as you move toward it. Reward yourself for your accomplishments, identify specific ways you can improve on your setbacks and shortcomings, and make sure to leave time to unwind.
