Top 5 Benefits to Earning Your Master’s Degree in Nursing Online

Pursuing your Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited online nursing degree program could be the wisest decision of your career. It’s no longer uncommon for a top nursing school to offer an accredited nursing degree program online, in additional to the traditional classroom courses. As the popularity of online nursing programs soars, so does their educational quality. Nursing students pursuing a Master’s degree online can be confident that their degree will enhance their career prospects and provide them with the training they need.
As you weigh the pros and cons of an online master’s degree in nursing, this cheat sheet of the top 5 benefits may help you make up your mind.
1. Keep Working While In School
Like many prospective online nursing students, you probably already have a nursing job. Choosing between your job and pursuing higher education is tough, so why choose at all? The flexibility of an online degree allows you to keep your job and pursue your studies at the same time.
2. Spend Time With Your Family
Many nurses are already balancing work responsibilities with family commitments. Adding a Master’s degree program to your plate could be too challenging if you had to show up at a traditional campus at specific times. Attending classes online allows you to spend time with your family without shirking your coursework.
3. Take Advantage of Accessible Faculty
As an online nursing student, you’ll find your instructors to be far more accessible and communicative than with a campus-based program. Instead of having to make appointments or squeeze your questions into your professor’s office hours, you can email them at any time of day or night. You’ll also have access to resources such as virtual classrooms, online forums and live chat.
4. Enjoy Personalized Attention
You don’t have to worry about missing out on tuition assistance, financial aid information, career counseling and other resources usually found in the administration offices. Just like your professors, your adviser will be accessible online through a variety of channels and will give you plenty of personal attention—probably more than you’d receive if you had to stand in line during office hours.
5. Save Money
Did you know that an online Nursing Master’s degree program can be up to 50% more affordable than an on-campus degree? Online degree programs generally charge between $90 and $200 per credit, depending on the university. You will automatically qualify for the same kinds of financial assistance that the on-campus programs offer. Choosing an online degree program is an attractive option if money is tight.
Now that you understand the top 5 benefits of pursuing your Nursing Masters degree online, the next step is to find a Master’s degree program offered by an accredited university. You can start by finding out if your preferred nursing schools already offer online programs. Most prestigious universities do, so you’ll then want to compare the various online programs. Whichever online Master’s degree program you choose, you can be sure that it will open the door to improved job prospects in your nursing career!

I think online degree programs have a lot of advantages. First you save money, and 2nd you can spend more time with your family. I am thinking about attempting an online philosophy degree because I have new born son and my wife have been pushed to continue her work, so I will have time to be at home and take care for my family.
While I agree that an online degree is a smart move for a working adult, I have to question the value of a degree in philosophy? Philosophy is fine as long as you go on to earn a graduate degree in something that actually will lead to a career afterwards such as law for example, but on it’s on – in today’s economy – it’s a lot of time and money for a “soft” degree. 3 – 4- yrs to earn a bachelor’s degree in philosophy that will still leave one unemployable, or twelve months to become an LPN and start earning real money? Two years to become an associate degree RN and earn even more. Or better yet, 12 months to go from LPN to RN online and be earning $60,000 a year or more and have lots of ability to advance even further with th employer paying for your additional online nursing education along the way.
I understand that everyone is not cut out for nursing, but even then there are hundreds of high paying (and in demand) allied health career fields that make a heck of a lot more sense in the real world than philosphy. Well, best wishes with whatever you decide to do.
