Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses (RNs) who are prepared, through advanced education and clinical training, to provide preventive and acute health-care services to individuals of all ages. Nurse Practitioners must complete graduate-level education that leads to a Master’s degree in Nursing, and a growing number of NP's are going on to earn doctorate degrees. By 2015, all Nurse Practitioner programs will require a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree.

Nurse practitioners work independently and collaboratively on the health-care team, and can provide many of the primary care services that physicians provide, including performing physical exams; diagnose and treat common acute illnesses and injuries; provide immunizations; manage high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic problems; order and interpret X-rays and other lab tests; and counsel patients on disease prevention and health care options.

Nurse Practitioners specialize in practice areas that include: Pediatrics, Neonatal, Acute Care, Adult Family Practice, Gerontology, Nurse-Midwifery, and Nurse Anesthetist among others. Nurse practitioners earn anywhere from $82,000 to $180,000 plus per year depending on experience, specialty, and practice setting. Nurse Practitioners frequently work along side doctors in private practice settings, but also work in their own clinics, in hospitals, in government service, for corporations, and for major insurers.
