New regulations will require all new nurse practitioners to hold a doctoral degree starting in 2015. Nurses who wish to hold certain advanced practice titles such as nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist or clinical nurse specialist will also be required to complete campus-based or online doctor of nursing programs.

While the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree primarily prepares nurses for advanced clinical practice roles, other nursing doctoral degrees are available, including the Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc, DNS, DSN), and Doctor of Nursing Philosophy (PhD). Career paths may vary among these degrees—nurses who wish to work in teaching or research may opt for the PhD in nursing, while nurses who want a clinical career may prefer to earn a DNP or DNS.
